Here are 5 sketches and notes to illustrate my ideas for my photo manipulated image:

Idea 1: The student’s head is a piggy bank, made of porcelain or glass. The piggy bank has been smashed and pieces of it scatter, along with a couple of coins. One of the pieces is clearly the money slot of the piggy bank. This communicates the idea of money being all this student can think about, and when the pressure and demands get too much, the mind explodes.

Idea 2: Student is at checkout in a supermarket, with items placed on conveyor belt. To communicate idea of the groceries ‘costing an arm and a leg’, the student is placing their arm and leg on the conveyor belt with the groceries and is standing with only one arm and one leg remaining. This idea shows desperation and the sheer struggle to make ends meet when trying to pay for living costs with little earnings.

Idea 3: Student giving arm and leg in exchange for keys to apartment. This again portrays the idea of something being so expensive it 'costs an arm and a leg'. The image shows that affording accommodation while studying is a difficult task.

Idea 4: A piggy bank sits on a desk with a tiny student trapped inside with their head in their hands. Inside the piggy bank is a couple of loose coins. The piggy bank is glass. This portrays the idea of a student really struggling with not having enough money. With the size comparison between the large piggy bank and tiny student trapped inside, the idea of being helpless and overwhelmed is portrayed.

Idea 5: A sad, skinny, empty piggy bank leaning on sad student for support. Can clearly see coin slot to show it is a piggy bank. This is similar to idea 4 in what is being conveyed.

Hi, I really like your article and think you have some really great ideas. I quite like idea 3 because I feel its more straight to the point in what your trying to communicate 🙂

I think you’ve come up with some really cool concepts! Your article is kind of similar to mine 😀 I particular like concept 4 the most – the supermarket checkout idea is quite intriguing which is good. A suggestion would be to make sure that your focus is obvious (e.g. background blurred) and to make your colours natural and not to edited looking. Details like these would help to show depth and a ‘casual grocery shopping day’ effect to it. Overall I think this could be a striking final image!

I really like the concept of using a piggy bank as I think this will look really effective and clear. I think concept 1 is really clear and changing the persons head to being a cracked piggy bank would look visually striking and convey your message well. Concept 4 I think would also work well by digitally placing objects and people inside the piggy bank. All your concepts really show and convey you chosen message.

I love the 4th idea, it really shows the ideas in your article, and I love how the 5th idea show the pig being skinny, maybe you could combine the two to make it more effective

Concept four is so good! It shows perfectly the idea of paying an arm and a leg just to live and how hard it is to keep up with the costs of living while studying! I think it would be something that you can photograph fairly easily too as if involves cutting out but not a lot of blending techniques to pull off. Can’t wait to see it finished!

  6. I like idea number 1 the most. It clearly shows that you’re talking about money, stress (the head that explodes), that all you think about is money and you can see the piggy bank as a symbol for paying for learning because of the position. I think this image can be very strong!

I have one thing you maybe need to think about to make the message stronger – How will you make sure that it is clear that it is about students?

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your work!

I really like your first concept. It really shows how money is always on students’ mind. Also, the fact that you intend to make it look like it is shattering just adds to the message of the article. What I want to say is just to be careful when blending the human head to the piggy bank. Make sure that the viewers sees that it is a piggy bank not just a human head mixed with a pig. But overall your ideas are great. I can’t wait to see what you choose to make.

  8. I really like idea number 2. I like the way you have used the cost of an arm and a leg in a literal sense as it makes the idea quite clear and also because this is a very relatable article to most of us students. Perhaps to make sure the idea is a bit more clearer than it already is, you could have the conveyor belt from the supermarket and take it out and put it in another setting. Maybe more of a run down area. Not sure how you will go about it but there is an idea for you 🙂
